August 31, 2001: Bus from Trujillo to Huaras
HOME

Doug Sharon joins group, Carol Mackey leaves us.
We go by bus 3 hours to Casma, stop and order lunch and then drive out to the site of Sechin.  It is dated 1,500 BC.  That is all that is impressive about it.  There are very nice carved murals of figures of warriors, body parts, etc.
Then, the "piece de resistance," the five-hour drive to Huaras.  This is nothing short of a total mind blowing experience.  We climb from sea level to 13,200 ft in 3 hrs to the top of the pass.  Then we drop down into Huaras, 9,000 ft.  We have crossed the Cordellara Negra.  The drive up wound on a narrow, one lane gravel road through little farming villages, steep hillsides terraced to grow corn, wheat and other crops.  The villagers wore colorful costumes and all of the women wore hats.  When we reached the summit everyone piled out of the bus for a magnificent Andean sunset!  We arrived at Huaras after dark.  This seems like an interesting town.
